Larimar

What is it? Larimar is a rare blue stone from the Dominican Republic, which was formed by active volcanos. Although Dominican Republic locals were familiar with this stone, it was “discovered,” mined and named for marketing purposes in 1974 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, and Norman Rilling, a member of the U.S. Peace Corps. Mendez named the stone after his daughter, Larissa, when combining her name with the Spanish word for the sea, “mar.” Larimar is also known as the “Atlantis Stone,” because it serves as a reminder of the ancient civilization of Atlantis. This crystal has been used as not only a good luck talisman, but as a powerful emotional and spiritual healer.

How to identify larimar: Larimar is primarily made up of pectolite, which is a sodium calcium silicate, and contains traces of copper which give it that beautiful blue color. Larimar can be found in colors that range from light blue, and blue-green mixed with white streeks or marbling, which resembles beams of light dancing on the bottom of a pool or clear ocean floor.
